UV Radiation and Skin Cancer: The Science behind Age Restrictions for Tanning Beds
نویسنده
چکیده
E very year, millions of people climb in various states of undress into warm, glowing tanning beds, where during a typical 2-to 15-minute session they'll absorb a controlled dose of ultraviolet (UV) radiation at an intensity up to two to three times stronger than the sunlight striking the equator at noon. The tanning industry has grown rapidly since the 1980s, 1 rising to an estimated 28 million users in the United States. 2 This rise has been accompanied by an increase in diagnoses of skin cancer. The reasons behind the rising skin cancer diagnoses remain open to debate. Some experts attribute the rise to more frequent skin cancer screening, whereas others blame environmental and behavioral risk factors, particularly changes in UV exposure. In this latter context, UV-emitting

The potential carcinogenic risk of tanning beds: clinical guidelines and patient safety advice
INTRODUCTION In 2009, the WHO listed ultraviolet (UV) radiation as a group 1 carcinogen. In spite of this, each year, millions of people tan indoor in Western countries. The aim of this review is to summarize evidence of tanning bed carcinogenesis and to present guidelines for use of tanning beds and patient safety advice. METHODS A narrative review of the literature was conducted based on bo...

Because of the potential negative impact of artificial tanning on public health, this study was to investigate tanning bed use behaviour, UV related risk perception and beliefs about tanning in the German population. METHODS In 2007, a rep...
متن کاملVitamin D, ultraviolet exposure, and skin cancer in the elderly.
Ultraviolet (UV) radiation has both beneficial and harmful effects on the human body. Its most important beneficial effect may be vitamin D production in the skin, also known as vitamin D photosynthesis. This is of particular interest for the elderly who often show vitamin D-deficiency. Intentional UV exposure has been recommended by different institutions in order to increase vitamin D levels....
